The Maras salt mines
At an altitude of 3,300 meters in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a salty underground spring feeds approximately 3,000 ponds carved into the mountainside. The water evaporates in the sun, the salt deposits, and the families of Maras harvest it with shovels as they have done since pre-Inca times. Each pond belongs to a family in the village.
It is not sea salt: it comes from a fossil aquifer, which gives it its pink color and a less pungent taste.
- Origin: Maras salt mines, Cuzco, Peru.
- Texture: fine and homogeneous grind, quick dissolution.
- Composition: unrefined salt, without additives or anti-caking agents.
